Weird and wonderful desks

Just when you thought office design couldn’t become more contemporary, whacky or out-there and that the concept of standing desks was bizarre – here come the weird and wonderful desks.

For those who work a 9-5 lifestyle, other than your bed, your personal workspace is where you spend the majority of your time. It’s a reflection of you and the work that you do. So before you decide to give your desk a facelift and vamp it up with an array of vintage frames, a fancy pen-pot or a stylish flower arrangement, why not toy with the idea of a new desk?

In this blog, we’ll look at a number of unconventional, unique and albeit a bit weird style of desks.

Working while running?

We’ve heard of the standing desk. This type of desk seems to have crept up in popularity recently due to associated health benefits. Varicose veins, obesity and disability are all problems which could be combatted using standing desks – hence why more organisations are investing in them.

But what if we take this a ‘step’ further? Say hello to the treadmill desk. Surely walking while working would do wonders for your health, fitness, metabolic rate as well as help keeping your mind focussed and alert during the working day.

Whether or not this is a practical idea is up for discussion – typing while burning calories may be somewhat difficult!

Working on Wheels?

While this unique desk isn’t first and foremost designed for the office, wheeling while you work could be beneficial! The Conference bike is a bike designed so that seven workers can be sat together, brainstorming and coming up with innovative ideas. And on a sunny day, who wouldn’t prefer to be sat outside working rather than in a stuffy office? Did someone say, “Conference in the park?”

Comfort over style

Designed by Nethrone, this office desk-chair combo is perhaps the most ergonomically beneficial. Your arms, backs, arms and wrists are at all times guaranteed to be at the best angle, perfectly suited to you and your sitting needs. The chair is fully adjustable, and as a result fully comfortable. And with a remote control that allows you to control the chair’s positions, monitor, recline and many other features, let’s just hope that you don’t fall asleep!

The Nest

Bored of using the same old board room for meetings and brainstorming sessions? It goes without saying that zoning areas for collaborative work need to be somewhat stimulating! We came across the “Nest Desk”.

As well as appearing to be perhaps “too cosy”, this playful design allows employees to snuggle up with their laptop and commit to a powerful, innovative and enjoyable brainstorming hour (or two)! See how blog on how office design can spark creativity within the workplace.

Desks that will go down in history

Creating quite truly unique office desks, New York-company Tom Spina designs, aspire to be ahead of trends and innovative in the furniture industry. We’re fairly certain that the majority of you would love to have a desk individually modelled on your favourite movie, genre, decade, or whatever tickles your fancy! The company specialises in creating custom sculptures and preserving movie props – so why not combine all of these and create the perfect workstation?
Check out this prehistoric office desk based on designer and owner, Tom Spina’s, favourite movie – Jurassic Park.

Although it would be cool to have your own personalised desk based on your favourite movie, just to be on the safe side, we recommend putting it forward to your boss and colleagues first. For some reason or another, it may not match the décor or colour scheme of the rest of the office and be quite distracting!

Your thoughts?

What do you think of these office desk designs? Do they tickle your fancy and would you consider investing in a conference bike to stimulate productivity within the workplace?
