Bruntwood Construction Limited & Zerum appointed Workspace Design and Build to carry out all works except M&E at the former Kellogg’s headquarters in Old Trafford, Manchester. The client’s aim was to turn the building into home for University Academy 92 (UA92) – a newly initiated university co-founded by Lancaster University and the members of the Class of 92.
The first phase of the project consisted of 50,000 sq ft of CAT A / CAT B works over 12 months, including the creation of a lecture theatre, library, common parts, reception area, multiple teaching rooms and server. The dated wallpaper and carpet in the common parts were removed and new, more modern carpet and floor coverings were installed. The exposed ceiling and concrete posts were left visible throughout the building, and in the lecture theatre, the bare, blockwork wall was painted over which keeps with the industrial style requested by the client.
The skylight and the glazing panels in the atrium were kept the same but cleaned up to conserve some of the original features of this Grade II listed building. A revolving door and curtain walling was installed to the main entrance of the building as well. Once the first phase of works were complete, we were then invited to tender for the Media Suite and Servery elements of the scheme, which consisted of the installation of a high end commercial kitchen, a bespoke serving counter and contemporary furniture with sympathy to the industrial style design.
